Jenny Decker is a very dear, long time family friend. She has Charcot Marie Tooth disease (CMT). This is a inherited group of disorders that damage the peripheral nerves and causes muscle weakness and atrophy (shrinking) in her arms and legs.

She is an ICU nurse who has been living in Hawaii for many years. This is where she learned to sail. 

Jenny is attempting to be the first person with CMT to solo sail around the world. She is using this adventure to increase awareness about CMT and the need to continue researching for a cure.

She started her voyage in 2023 and expects to complete her journey in 2-3 more years. She is able to fund this endeavor by using her life savings and through donations from people like you and me. 

Jenny lives a simple life aboard her trusty boat SV Tiama.  She is extremely thrifty with the money she has. But boats have parts that break, anchorage spots are not free, and neither are provisions. These days, it is  a luxury to find a McDonalds at one of her anchorages so she can have a little taste of home with a cheeseburger and fries.

In September 2026, Jenny sailed through the Singapore Strait and the Malacca Strait. It is one of the world's most congested traffic choke points.  She had to navigate around huge cargo ships and tankers. She battled through Sumatra storms that bring violent squalls, blinding rain, life threatening lightening strikes, shifting sand banks-alongside a constant threat of opportunistic piracy and armed robberies under the cover of darkness. While traveling narrow channels Jenny also had to constantly maneuver around massive unlit drift nets and aggressive fishing vessels. Terrying, right?

With nerves of steel, exemplary sailing skills and ingenuity, with a little good luck thrown in, Jenny made it through.
